This here is my husband's favorite meal. Every time I ask for his input on what he wants for dinner (or breakfast or lunch, for the matter), his reply is always, "fried potatoes and hamburger." Always. In fact, if I try and serve it with side dishes, he gets upset because then he has less room to fill up on his favorite meal. It's a guy fest, what can I tell you?
Fried Potatoes and Hamburger
Yield: serves 2-4
1 TBS vegetable oil
1 large onion, diced
1 lb hamburger
2 TBS minced garlic
2 TBS vegetable oil
5 medium potatoes
1 tsp salt (or to taste)
dash pepper
shredded cheddar, for topping (optional)
Wash the potatoes and prick with a toothpick or cake tester. Microwave on high until they are almost tender through. Let cool until they can be handled. Rub off the peel and cut into small pieces.
Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onions once the skillet is hot. Saute for 3-5 minutes, until the onions have browned slightly and are translucent.
Add the ground meat and begin to brown. After the meat has browned slightly, push the meat and onions to the side of the pan and add the remaining oil and let heat. When oil is hot, add the potatoes and garlic. Stir to evenly coat and reduce heat to medium. Cook, stirring infrequently, until potatoes are nicely browned, about 15-20 minutes.
Serve with shredded cheddar cheese, if desired.
Never thought to do this! I bet my guys will love it. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteTried this yesterday (so easy doing the potatoes in the microwave!). My boys (ages 42, 5 & 2) all loved it. My husband said next time I should try it with corn (like an easier version of shephard's pie). So glad I stumbled upon your blog. I noticed a link posted in a comment on Pioneer Woman (I think it was your mom's comment maybe?).
ReplyDeletewow going to try this tonite!!!
ReplyDeleteNever thought of doing the potatoes in the microwave before frying them. Here in NM we also add a side of red chili sauce with this dish as well as tortillas. My kids make burritos with it.
ReplyDeleteI made this tonight..I did 1/2 lean ground beef and 1/2 ground turkey...2% cheese and added turkey bacon pieces...it was amazing!!!! Thanks for Sharing!!
ReplyDeleteSo glad you liked it, Tracy. We're definitely a fan here. I might have to try the half beef/half turkey combo. It sounds good!
DeleteJust giving you a little tip here. No harm intended. Did you know that ground turkey actually has more calories, fat and sodium than beef? I was surprised to read this myself! It's a little lower in saturated fat but has less vitamins and protein so it sounds like beef might be the better option than turkey. 🤷♀️😊🤷♀️
DeleteIt's what's for dinner tonight here! My husband's favorite too!
ReplyDeleteok...my almost 16 year old boy is a giant...but a picky eater it seems....but he actually requests this! he loves it - thank you - even I can make it; although my potatoes don't look as wonderful as yours; I can still make it edible, which trust me...is an accomplishment.
ReplyDeleteI saw this on pinterest and wanted to let you know I'm going to make this...thank you so much for posting this....
ReplyDeleteI'm off to try this recipe, saw it on pinterest.
ReplyDeleteSaw this on interest today and am so Trying this tonight. It looks so yummy!!!
ReplyDeleteTried this...recipe needs more detail. It turned out half way decent, but it could've been a whole lot better. How long do you cook the potatoes in the microwave? At least an estimate.. also...cooking the meat for fifteen to twenty minutes AFTER it's browned? Seems as if it would be nothing but crispy ash...

I feel like anyone who has cooked before would know she was talking about precooking the potatoes in the microwave so u only cook them a few minutes with the already cooked beef.
DeleteMy potatoes never got browned but my meat was overcooked. I would do this differently next time by removing the meat after browning until the potatoes were fried. Still tasted good though.
ReplyDeleteThis was good, I will be making it again. Because my pan is not big enough, I removed the onions and then the burger after cooking. I added a small yellow pepper with the onion. After the potatoes started to brown, I added paprika. I put the onion and burger on top and stirred gently, covered and let it cook on low heat. I need more quick meals I can make in a hurry.
DeleteThis recipe was great and so easy to follow!! The tip about microwaving the potatoes made it that much easier!! I have 6 kids and every single one of them loved it!! I even topped my serving with a spoonful of sour cream! YUM! I will definitely be referring this recipe to others! Thanks :)
ReplyDeleteIt really just depends on the meat you use. I usually use 93% lean beef and don't drain it at all. If you use 80% though, then draining would be important.
ReplyDeleteOMG, I made this tonight and my family could not stop eating it. They all loved it so much. Thank you so much for posting this on Pinterest. THank you Thank you Thank you....lol
ReplyDeleteOhh this looks delicious! going to cooking it tonight, thanks huge for the recipe!
ReplyDeleteI'm going to try this
ReplyDeleteit's sounds really good and after reading the comments. hell yea🤑

ReplyDeletefound on interest, as the meat in our stores always has to be drained will be sure to do this, but i would take meat and onions out and slice up potatoes and fry sepperately then mix
ReplyDeleteI've made this and was good!I did cook meat separate from potatoes since i dice up potatoes and cook with bacon grease till browned and then add meat and onion mix! A few flour tortillas and salsa made it even yummier!
ReplyDeleteWould be good with a soft yolked egg of sorts or scrambled.
ReplyDeleteOh boy I love potatoes burger! and this time I'd like to learn how to cook it myself. my experience in kitchen is very shallow, in fact, I only cook in papas games (online cooking games), but in real life... egg omelette is the best I can do... this is going to be a huge step up for me, assuming I master this recipe :)). big thanks.
ReplyDeleteI make a dish similar to this except I add cabbage and green pepper. My husband and I both love it.
ReplyDeleteThanks sharing

I made this for dinner tonight and omg is this INCREDIBLE. I subbed the chicken broth for veggie broth to make it vegetarian and I am sure it tastes just as good — if not better! I am definitely saving this and making it again. And again. Thanks for the post!

Great dish. Not bland, but next time I may use seasoned salt instead of table salt.
