Fried Potatoes and Hamburger

This here is my husband's favorite meal. Every time I ask for his input on what he wants for dinner (or breakfast or lunch, for the matter), his reply is always, "fried potatoes and hamburger." Always. In fact, if I try and serve it with side dishes, he gets upset because then he has less room to fill up on his favorite meal. It's a guy fest, what can I tell you?

Fried Potatoes and Hamburger
Yield: serves 2-4

1 TBS vegetable oil
1 large onion, diced
1 lb hamburger
2 TBS minced garlic
2 TBS vegetable oil
5 medium potatoes
1 tsp salt (or to taste)
dash pepper
shredded cheddar, for topping (optional)

Wash the potatoes and prick with a toothpick or cake tester. Microwave on high until they are almost tender through. Let cool until they can be handled. Rub off the peel and cut into small pieces.

Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onions once the skillet is hot. Saute for 3-5 minutes, until the onions have browned slightly and are translucent.

Add the ground meat and begin to brown. After the meat has browned slightly, push the meat and onions to the side of the pan and add the remaining oil and let heat. When oil is hot, add the potatoes and garlic. Stir to evenly coat and reduce heat to medium. Cook, stirring infrequently, until potatoes are nicely browned, about 15-20 minutes.

Serve with shredded cheddar cheese, if desired.

  2. Tried this yesterday (so easy doing the potatoes in the microwave!). My boys (ages 42, 5 & 2) all loved it. My husband said next time I should try it with corn (like an easier version of shephard's pie). So glad I stumbled upon your blog. I noticed a link posted in a comment on Pioneer Woman (I think it was your mom's comment maybe?).

  4. Never thought of doing the potatoes in the microwave before frying them. Here in NM we also add a side of red chili sauce with this dish as well as tortillas. My kids make burritos with it.

    1. So glad you liked it, Tracy. We're definitely a fan here. I might have to try the half beef/half turkey combo. It sounds good!

    2. Just giving you a little tip here. No harm intended. Did you know that ground turkey actually has more calories, fat and sodium than beef? I was surprised to read this myself! It's a little lower in saturated fat but has less vitamins and protein so it sounds like beef might be the better option than turkey. 🤷‍♀️😊🤷‍♀️

  11. Tried this...recipe needs more detail. It turned out half way decent, but it could've been a whole lot better. How long do you cook the potatoes in the microwave? At least an estimate.. also...cooking the meat for fifteen to twenty minutes AFTER it's browned? Seems as if it would be nothing but crispy ash...

    1. I feel like anyone who has cooked before would know she was talking about precooking the potatoes in the microwave so u only cook them a few minutes with the already cooked beef.

  12. My potatoes never got browned but my meat was overcooked. I would do this differently next time by removing the meat after browning until the potatoes were fried. Still tasted good though.

    1. This was good, I will be making it again. Because my pan is not big enough, I removed the onions and then the burger after cooking. I added a small yellow pepper with the onion. After the potatoes started to brown, I added paprika. I put the onion and burger on top and stirred gently, covered and let it cook on low heat. I need more quick meals I can make in a hurry.

  13. This recipe was great and so easy to follow!! The tip about microwaving the potatoes made it that much easier!! I have 6 kids and every single one of them loved it!! I even topped my serving with a spoonful of sour cream! YUM! I will definitely be referring this recipe to others! Thanks :)

  14. It really just depends on the meat you use. I usually use 93% lean beef and don't drain it at all. If you use 80% though, then draining would be important.

  19. found on interest, as the meat in our stores always has to be drained will be sure to do this, but i would take meat and onions out and slice up potatoes and fry sepperately then mix

  20. I've made this and was good!I did cook meat separate from potatoes since i dice up potatoes and cook with bacon grease till browned and then add meat and onion mix! A few flour tortillas and salsa made it even yummier!
